Healthy living habits have been shown by research to improve brain function and memory. As people get older there is certain deterioration that occurs in the brain which affects memory, but a lot of this can be minimized with healthy living habits. This article will discuss certain things that people can do to keep their memory and brain functioning at the highest possible level.

Healthy Eating

Foods that are rich in B vitamins and folic acid have been shown to improve brain function and memory capacity. Some of the best sources of these nutrients are melons, strawberries, dark green vegetables like spinach, broccoli and asparagus, as well as black beans and other legumes and citrus fruits. Antioxidants which neutralize harmful free radicals are also important, and some of these include vitamins E and C, as well as beta carotene. These can be found in berries, seeds and nuts, grapes, and green tea, as well as in many green vegetables. Omega three fatty acids improve brain function and memory as well as having other positive benefits. These can be obtained from cold water fish like tuna, salmon, herring and mackerel, as well as from walnuts and walnut oil.

Getting Enough Sleep

Getting enough sleep is important is good brain function. If people have insomnia or sleep apnea it is difficult to concentrate, and this is important for good memory function.

Controlling Stress

Cortisol, the stress hormone, can damage the hippocampus, which is the most important part of the brain in information processing leading to memory. Stress also lowers the ability of people to concentrate, and this is detrimental to good memory.

Physical Exercise

Regular physical exercise will increase the flow of oxygen to the brain, and this enhances good memory. It also lowers the chances of certain cardiovascular diseases and diabetes, all of which are harmful for brain functioning and good memory.

Avoiding Smoking

Smoking hurts people in so many ways, and poorer memory function is just one of them. Smoking can constrict arteries and impede blood flow and can cause other vascular diseases which harm the brain and lower memory ability.
