Here are a number of tips to improve memory:
Concentrate and Pay Attention
Remembering new information takes mental effort. The information needs to be processed by the brain and understood and then it is transferred to other areas of the brain and stored as memory. This whole process is said to take about seven seconds for most people.
Review the Thought As Often As Possible
If there is an idea or thought or fact that you want to remember, review that thought in your mind as soon as possible, and then review it each day until it is remembered easily. A good way to do this is to write the information, like a new vocabulary word for example, on a 3x5 card and look at it periodically.
Organize Complex Material
If the information you wish to remember is complex, it is best to break the ideas down to basic points and reorganize them in a logical manner. Try to remember the main ideas and be able to put them into your own words. Again, review this information as often as necessary.
Try to Relate New Information to Something Else You Already Know
You might try to relate a new vocabulary word to another word you know that sounds similar, for example. If you can come up with a visual picture of how the two words relate, that would make the memory connection even stronger and more effective.
Involve Other Senses
Repeat a new thought or idea out loud several times. Hearing the word or idea will help the memory connections in the brain become stronger. Writing the information down will also help to reinforce the memory process. If the thought can be related to certain sounds or colors, that will help the memory process.
You need to stay motivated to remember the new ideas you wish to commit to memory. All the above memory techniques involve mental work. There is no passive way to improve your memory, you need to put in some real effort.
These memory tips are helpful, but you can improve your memory by up to three times by getting help from an expert. Click here to find out how.
