Mnemonics are ways to use reminders to remember things. Here are seven types of mnemonic tricks that can be used to improve memory of names, ideas, and numbers.
Rhymes and Alliterations
The best example of this is the rhyme everyone learns to remember the number of days in each month. “Thirty days have September, April, June and November, etc.” You can think of alliterations when you meet people to remember their names. If you meet a perky woman named Barbara, you can remember her as “Bouncy Barbara”. Needless to say, if the alliteration you come up with has negative connotations it would be wise to keep it to yourself.
Method of Loci
People who are going to give speeches have used this method for years. The main points of a speech are tied to a familiar route, like the route to the grocery store you shop at frequently, for example. Pick out the major features along the route, like an exit or overpass, and tie an idea to that location. In this way you can move through the speech like you travel to the store.
Acronyms
With this method each letter of the acronym used represents what you wish to remember. A long-used example of this is for music students who need to remember the notes represented by the spaces on the treble clef. These happen to spell the word Face. So the notes in the spaces on the treble clef which are between the lines are F, A, C, and E.
Sentences
Another long-used musical example for remembering the notes on the lines of the treble clef is the sentence “Every good Boy Does Fine”. Here the first letter of each word is the note to be remembered. So the notes represented by the lines of the treble clef are E, G, B, D and F. It is said that medical and dental students sometimes use nonsensical sentences to remember various parts of the anatomy that they are required to commit to memory.
Thinking in “Chunks”
If you can group things into smaller pieces it is sometimes easier to remember them. Good examples of this idea are remembering phone numbers and social security numbers. Instead of remembering a string of 10 numbers for a phone number, for example, break this down into two groups of three numbers and one group of four.
Jokes
If you can associate an idea or a person’s name with a joke, it might become easier to remember because funny or strange things are easier to remember than are ordinary things.
Visual Images
If you meet a man named John and can think about him leaving a table to go to the lavatory, that might help remember his name.
